Emergency contraception or commonly known as the morning after pill is contraception that can be used after unprotected sexual intercourse or if other contraceptive methods have failed. There are different types of emergency contraception depending on each individuals needs, however you will need to act quickly in order to reduce the chance of you becoming pregnant.
Types of emergency contraceptive pill
levonorgestrel (levonelle one step) : can be used up to 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse (UPSI) or failed contraception. It works in several ways by preventing ovulation, altering the cervical mucus and changing the lining of the uterus reducing the chance of implantation of a fertilised egg.
Ulipristal acetate (ella one) can be used up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sexual intercourse or failed contraception. It works by delaying ovulation if ovulation has not occurred and also alters the uterus lining making it more difficult for a fertilised egg attaching to the uterus reducing your chance of becoming pregnant.
